If you want your website to be a useful tool for business, you need to decide what you want your website to do. Last week I put this question to you and included some of the answers vets have given me recently. This is probably the most important decision you'll make when it comes to your online marketing. There are 3 Steps to follow:

Step 1: write down the No. 1 thing you want your website to do

Step 2: ask yourself, can the impact of this action be measured in terms of improved business? i.e. can you say, "my website did x this month and that means I got y in terms of more business"?

Step 3: if it can't be measured, there is a choice. Continue on your path of not measuring (you may choose then to stop getting my emails because I'll keep banging on about measuring)

OR - Go back to Step 1 and think again about what you want your site to do.

After working in this area for 14 years, here's how I see the world:
The sole purpose of your website is to generate business
When a consumer visits your site, in order to generate business they must call you
Therefore, the most important job your website has is to generate phone calls

It's that simple.

If you are not measuring the phone calls your website generates you have absolutely no idea how effective it is.

Have a think about that. Think about all the conversations you've had about your website, about how to improve it, think of all the money you've spent on it (or conversely, think of all the money you haven't spent, thinking you were getting a good deal). Think of all the team meetings you have where the website has come up. Think of all the times you've felt, "I just don't know what to do?!".

Now think about how you've just realised what you can do. The number of phone calls your site generates is the most important piece of data you need.

If you do one thing with your website, measure the phone calls. Make it the next thing you do.

Next week we'll discuss how to do this - and then later, how to increase the phone calls.

Remember to register for the webinar if you haven't already.

Have a great week.
